The ABS in my Tahoe has been acting up lately. It seems there is a problem with the ABS tone rings. The only way to get to a repair those seems to be a replacement of the hub/wheel bearing/tone ring assembly. Any recommendations on where to get these for a good price? Our local NAPA is about $270 each.

However, Sam Strano had national brand bearings for about the same price as they offered me. There are two choices for you.

For wheel hub/bearings I have had good luck with Autozone online. Price was better than the local store and they shipped free. YMMV

Thanks guys. Sam actually recommended Autozone or such as well for the hubs. Price was $166 each and no shipping charges.

Sam will get an order for new rotors and pads.

What yr and whats happening? I will assume low speed(5-8mph) activation I know the later ones New Body style has some issue.

It's a 99 and that is exactly the problem. There is a recall for the New Body Style but not the Old Body Style (like mine). My local mechanic also confirmed that he has had to change a few. No ABS lights or anything. Apparently the tone ring corrodes and it changes the airgap to the sensor. This causes problems with low speed braking. Pull the ABS fuse and the brakes work fine.

Hey Neil I just looked up the issue. Yes these hubs have the same issue the newer trucks have. Clean area of wheel speed mounting. Rust gets under the Sensor and picks its up causing low speed activation. The tsb I found dated Jan 06' covers all the old body style trucks to 95. My software doenst allow me to post online. PM a fax number and I will send over the repair instructions and testing.
