Full Version: GM wants my car back...

I got a letter in the mail today that my local dealer needs used 2000 Malibus in order to fill some kind of special used vehicle requests. They included a fake check for $1,000 off any new car, truck, van, or sport ute. Guess that doesn't include a C6. Based on other threads on this board GM's in a hurt to sell off cars even at a loss. So why shouldn't I take advantage of that?

I can't afford much so I told myself... if they can match my current payments then I wouldn't have anything to loose. My Malibu has over 80K, an oil leak that I can ignore for some time yet, 2 year old tires that should have been rotated last year, a new leatheret seat cover, great paint and interior, all the options available, newer front brakes, and a week old fan belt.

I would be looking at a Malibu Maxx, dark grey and the only option I would want is the side impact airbags. Not because I'm a safety freak, but those are the only impacts that make me shiver. Or maybe a Colorado, they're about the same price but worse on gas and have that whole top heavy thing going on.

The only catch is that my current payments are $150 a month! Something tells me I'm coming home with nothing new. Thought some of you would find this interesting.

The letter is just BS to get you in the door.

They have no order, who would want to buy a whole bunch of used cars?

Kinda sad really.

GM, build it right, price it right, they will come.

I'm not clear from your posts, but you're not saying they'll only give you $1000 for your Malibu are you? unsure.gif

You should be able to lease quite a few new vehicles for $150 a month, but buy? If you're thinking about buying a new vehicle, watch out for depreciation. A car like a Chevy Malibu I bet tanks like a rock for the first 2 years.

I knew it sounded pretty bad, but I posted because some of you would find it entertaining on some level. The check was for $1,000 off of a new car, not for my car. I still owe some on mine, but then I'll own it. Otherwise I'll still have car payments on top of college loan payments. I pretty much use a car until it's used up anyway, so I'm not too concerned about resale value. Besides, my car wont be worth much soon anyway!

I highly doubt I'll get anything, I'm just thinking. I'll go and let the sales people entertain me for a while. tongue.gif

Sounds like you should keep your 5 year old Malibu then. It shouldn't be used up at all in 80K miles, and your description above confirms that.

There's lots of better ways to entertain yourself than to spend time with a car salesman. cool.gif

They want Chris' '96 Camaro too. We had a good laugh about taking the thing down there in the trailer and rolling it out and into the service area. "How much ya gonna give us fer it? She ain't runnin' and she's missin' some interior stuff."

...you guys with those letters should all take the damn things down there and tell them:

"Here....keep it, and unless you can give me a smokin' deal on a Caddy or Vette,.....I won't be needing a GM vehicle until some decent/relevent cars are to be had on your lot!"

I bet they can get you a Chevy Aveo for around that price if not less. biggrin.gif

I just picked an '05 up 2 weeks ago for $247 x 36... smile.gif

That $3700 I had on my GM card rebate was burning a hole in my pocket.

What's funny, is I lose more hp through the drivetrain in my Camaro, than the Aveo puts to the ground!

But it's been unexpectedly comfortable, roomy enough, handles better than expected, and man it's good on gas.

That's my point, my mom is paying over $300 for an '03 Monte Carlo. $247 for an aveo.... $150 for a Malibu isn't likely at all. But I'll have to see if they want to move the cars that bad.

Like I said, I doubt I'll get the car anyway.
John_D.
Yeah, even at 0% interest, 150 x 48 is only $7200, or 150 x 36 is 5400.

A lease might get you down around that payment amount, but then you have to give the car back.

This link will take you to a page of all GM "allowances" and special financing rates.
They're showing a $2500 allowance on the Malibu in the south central part of the US.
