I learned that one of my competitors in CMC in my region works for Hot Rod and has been doing a bunch of articles on his build-up to a CMC car. I got the April issue today at the store, but this was apparently the 3rd installment of more to come. I'll get the subsequent issues, but I was wondering if anyone has installments one and two?

Yeah, I suppose. But I have mixed emotions about the whole situation anyway. It wasn't like he was hiding anything in the article that I did read (something like "here's where I exploited the gray areas of the rules with my engine").

On one hand "Rules is rules".

On the other hand, I'm just too stupid to give a crap if the dyno and scales show he's within power and weight limits when measured after a race. I just want to meet some new track people, have a good time and see the local CMC car count grow. The articles are interesting just to see a more experienced group of people talk about what I am doing...

I feel much the same as you do. However, the appeal of CMC is budget and a friendly atmosphere. "Exploring" the grey areas begins the journey BACK to SCCA ... MHO ...

What Matt did was typical drag racer turned road racer mentality. Money buys wins.

...this is the way it works guys...gonna hafta face it someday....all the NASA="bunchofgoodolguysracingcleanandcheap" and SCCA="thedeviloftheracingworld" ideology's are a bit off....in fact both series have their pros and cons....as you would expect...does SCCA have the bureacratic mentality of the government...oftentimes...but you are kidding yourselves if you buy hook, line and sinker that with NASA, all "your buddies" in the paddock are following the letter of the law for the series and the competitors benefit...

Show me a rulebook, and I will show you guys who are cheatin' it....IN EVERY SERIES INVENTED.

The whole HR build off shows that in glaring detail.....and I can GAURANTEE 'ol Mr. King is NOWHERE near the first to think....."hmmmm, no tear downs eh....."

Racing is as racing is.....been that way forever.....and to think I just heard of the going price of a "SPEC MIATA" motor the other day.....$18,000 from Sunbelt... ...can't wait to see all my buddies in a few weeks and ask them how the "junkyard" motors they all bragged about a year or two are holding up....

That's really the natural progression of all forms of racing.

A new grassroots class is started to keep it simple, cheap, and fun. Then it evolves and gets ever more expensive and time-consuming to keep up. It also becomes more complex as the rules attempt to handle those seeking an excessively unfair advantage without stifling creativity, etc. Eventually, it becomes another established class with all the usual overhead. Then there is a void left in the grassroots niche, and another new one is started.

The same is actually true in ANY sport. If competitive underwater basketweaving took hold as a sport, people would eventually be cultivating special custom-grown willow trees optimized for basketmaking.

That's just the way it works.

I too fell into the over-focusing on the car bit when I first started racing CMC. I'd say that held back my progress as a driver pretty well until I got my focus in the proper place, that is, to adjusting the nut behind the wheel! :drive:

Despite the issue of it being "wrong" or not, one of the practical concernes some people are having is totally invalid.

The concern that the lighter reciprocating mass will give him more power on the track but not "show up" on the dyno would be valid if the series used an engine dyno, waterbrake dyno, Mustang dyno or other eddy-current dyno or any other sort of dyno that holds the engine at a constant RPM while measuring torque.

However, this is NOT! a valid concern on a Dynojet. From the pistons all the way to the rubber in your tires where they meet the roller, if you have less mass that consumes less power to accelerate giving you a HP advantage on the track, it will show up as an increase in power on a Dynojet. Lighter pistons? Lighter flywheel? Lighter wheels/tires? They will all show a power increase on a Dynojet. That's one of the best things about them--they measure power the same way the engine will be used on the track--by making it accelerate a mass.

Yeah, I understand your point and everyone else's. But like I said over at the CMC forum, show me the dyno, show me the weight and with a spec tire "shut up and drive". Maybe I'm being dumb, but I think that this car's performance will be heavily influenced by the driver and that's what I am focused on. Besides, I knwo darn well that some model-year Mustangs couldn't make anywhere near the hp limit without "internal mods" and I don't want to beat a guy (or gal) when I know that he's down 50hp to me. No fun in that...

I am not fooling myself. As others, I believe that CMC will mature but I am in it pretty early so the evolution won't be too hard for me financially or otherwise (AI was painful for me in 2004).

I bought the April issue the other day so I am set there. I am just interested in installments 1 and 2 which I believe are February and March...

cdb95z28 - I'm at Beaver Run typically 3 out of 4 weekends during the summer. I am a track instructor for Beaver Run's lapping days and I am there for any NASA event - I will be running the road races both NASA Beaver Run dates (engine willing). If I blow up before then, I will be there to help out...

I also run most of the SCCA SCR autocrosses at Beaver Run plus the NHSCC autocrosses.

Come by and say hi if you see me. Car is in sig - it may have different decals but the paint will stay.
