2015 Silverado Keyfobs Options

About 6-7 months ago my truck started locking and unlocking the doors on the way into work. SOme research suggested a bad battery in the keyfob. I swapped the battery and it was fixed....for a while. A couple days ago I went to an HOA meeting and got out and hit the lock button and it unlocked. The next few times I hit lock it did the same thing. Then it finally locked. I assumed it was ok. The next morning on my way to work it was constantly unlocking the doors. I removed the battery when I got to the parking lot and locked the truck. When I removed the battery, I touched it to the contacts a few times and it unlocked the truck each time. So I tried a new battery when I got home and it was still unlocking the truck without any keys being pressed. It appears that I need a keyfob. I'm finding what look like crappy ones on amazon and the online dealers seem to want over $200. I need to check with my local dealer and see what they charge.

Also, if I find one, is there a way to program them without paying the dealer to do so?

I think the new standard is that if you have 2 working key fobs you can add more yourself, but if you only have one working you need the dealer to do it. That said, I have no experience with my 2016 or a car that has 1 good and 1 'kinda' working fob.

But I'm interested in your results as I've been meaning to pick up a cheapy fob in case something happens to my primary fob.

At least these trucks aren't keyless or the switchblade style keys!

On a 2015 you can add as many keys as you want, but fobs need to be programed by your dealer unfortunately. I work at a chevy dealer and this has been a point of frustration for many, and a lot of the trucks wont even program keys like they are supposed to.

I have a 2015 Silverado, and was told when I bought the truck that replacement Key Fobs and "Working" keys are a "Dealer" only item. Prior to 2015 apparently all you needed was a working key and fob, and the truck/car would take care of it. I would think by now, as long as you can prove you actually own the Vehicle in question...you might be able to find a Locksmith that has the necessary equipment to do it. I had an 08 Cobalt...POS car. 1 key. I found a local locksmith that made me a second key for $50....dealer wanted $100.

That's what I was finding. My dealer said $148 for the fob and roughly $100 to program it. If I'm paying to program one, I'll make them do two. I'm guessing it won't cost much more (if anything). However, I didn't want to spend $400 to get in the truck today. In the meantime I have my wife's keyfob and we can both unlock and lock the truck with our phones in a pinch.

Dealer says $125 to program the fob, same cost to do two fobs. I really don't want to buy $300 in keyfobs and chase that with a $125 service visit. Hmm.

I was just going to suggest that.....I looked at the Fobs a while back, the problem I was having is telling which ones were the real deal. The two that came with my truck are very generic looking... Black. Some of the ones I saw were Gray, Chrome and Black, Black, so how do you know?????

I looked. Found a few on amazon for $35. Reviews say they aren't great, range is inconsistent, etc. If I'm paying $125 to program them, I'd rather not buy junk.

Ok...I used my VIN, but here is what I found... https://www.gmpartsstore.com/v-2015-chevrol...ntry-components $52.83 for the one with Remote Start...not a bad price for a Genuine GM Part.

I just looked at this link again and it appears the price has gone up $20, but now it seems to indicate that it's not for remote start (unless I'm reading it wrong). I need to get the brake recall done on the truck and while it's there, I should have some keyfobs programmed. So I guess I better get moving on this.

^ did you see the story on 10TV (could have been Channel 6 or 4) a couple years ago where a guy had the local I-Team or whatever do a story on his Silverado's brake issues? It was doing the exact thing described in the recall. I think he had a 2016. People knew.
