Hey guys,
Want to match up the hei, spark plug wires, and MSD 6AL Box.
Whats the best style, gauge wire etc for this application with headers.
Thanks for the recommendation (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

What headers are you using? I'm running the 1 3/4" SLP's on my 3rd gen with the MSD wires that have 90 degree spark plug boots and they fit quite well. I'm running an MSD 6AL, MSD "drop in" ('87 and up style) Pro Billet distributor and Blaster 3 coil. It works well so far.

Thanks Kevin,
I'm running 1 5/8 headers but wanted to know if 8mm size wire was the best combo.
Heard new engine run on stand today. Sounds like a southern allstar dirt track motor. LOL Going to run wires under headers. Any luck with that?
What rev limit chip do you have in MSD 6AL? Is that your 92 3rd gen? If so, love to share ideas with ya. Thanks for your communication (IMG:http://www.frrax.com/rrforum/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

My only experience with running wires under the headers is with LT1 engines in 95-96 B-bodies. It's a complete, huge, royal PITA. That's running from the front of the engine off the Optispark, and around all the factory accessories.

But, I've never done it with an engine with a regular HEI. You'll probably want to run some looms or tie-downs off the oil pan, and make sure you label the wires on both ends, as I suspect working on the plug end will be a LOT easier from under the car.

Yes, the '92 is my project. I set the shift light ast 6,100 and the rev limiter at 6,500. The engine will spin to 7k, but it really quits making power around 6k. I left the extra RPM for those times when you have to stretch a gear on an autocross course (though that's not its intended job these days, I built the car to try to run AI at some point).

Running under the headers seems like a real pain in the butt. I have played with the idea, but never really found a good way to get the job done (without spending all weekend on it). So mine are a bit sloppy, but they run the traditional route.

Whats your intended use for the car? If its HPDE or racing of any kind routing under the valve cover is great for avoiding the headers, although its a royal pain in the ass to diagnose a burnt wire and replace should you burn one. I run HPDE and TT and run the wires over the valve cover and use DEI wire sleeve and these
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DEI-010512/. I don't think you can go wrong with a thicker wire with headers for the protection (8mm or thicker), but ensure you insulate them and keep them from contacting the headers. MSD is a great brand, and I like the moroso's as well. I have a MSD 6al with MSD wires and stock coil. This has worked great for years as long as I keep them off the headers on an LT1.

Thanks for the advise. My motor is on the engine stand. I have a universal set of MSD in which Im going to give the under the header a try.
Can't wait to get motor in car. You guys have a great season.

Do yourself a HUGE favor and DON'T run the wires under the headers. IF you have centerbolt valve covers (assuming you do) get some spark plug holders from Made for You Products and do what I did shown below...

As much as I hate when he's right, he's right. I have the same holders and they are great. This assumes you have the AIR pipes removed.
