Let me start off by saying I'm a shade tree mechanic and I haven't twiddled with this car or any for 12 years...
I hadn't started it for a year (yes I know that's a horrible thing)
It's summer and I thought I'ld clean it up and take it out get it legal inspection and blow the dust out
Charged it up..
Tried to start it .. cranked it a few times..
then it started to fire up..
cranked it again.. fired up
idled funny for a sec and then started to stall
tried to stop it by giving it gas but it shut off
I pumped it 2 times and tried to restart
nothing just turns over and over
took the breather off and gas is everywhere
dripping out of the nut/spring adjustment on the right side if ur facing it
Obviously it's flooded..
I tried drying everything off and not pumping it just to start it
does the same thing cranks but won't turn over and sprays gas out
of the hole in front of the valve opening

Any suggestions on how to get it started or what could be the problem ?

it's a 1987 camaro 305 4bbl
5 speed everything is pretty much stock
garage kept with 120,000 miles

Sounds like a stuck float in the carb. Is it blowing fuel out of the top of the carb into the air cleaner area?

yea everywhere...
and I assumed maybe that was it but.. you know how I panick

ps: u also know nothing is ever simple when it comes to "him" lol

how do I fix it ?

It's either a stuck float, or it's going to need some fresh gaskets. I'd consider a rebuild at this point, but you might tap it with the handle of a hammer to see if you can free the float. Be careful and don't burn it to the ground. Fire extinguishers are your friend.

Another reason I quit cranking on it.
I seem to remember a time when fire shot from the carb.. didn't want a repeat of that.
I dried it up with rags as best I could.
It ran all down the engine had to throw cardboard under it and at that point

When you tap on the carb. Do it next to where the fuel line goes in.
If it frees up the float & stops the over flow, Cool. Run it a while to see how it runs.
If not or she doesn't run very well, It will probably need carb work. From dirt & varnish build up.
I'd open it up & check it out, But then I turn wrenches for a living. A dirty carb is a pain.

hay ibzeus any luck yet? you could look on the third gen site. you may find one someone pulled to go aftermarket.

Update..

Camaro is fixed.

Dumped carb cleaner in carb and let it sit.
Clanked around a wee bit on carb and
it pretty much fired right up.
Spit and sputtered a little .. idles kinda kinky
Stunk for a few minutes..smoked a little and then evened out
dumped rest of carb cleaner in gas tank.
Gas is roughly 2 years old.. gonna siphon out what I can add some new blow it out
and fill it up with fresh gas and a bottle of some good fuel additive.
Now if only it would STOP RAINING long enough to take out the tops and do
all this, it would be awesome.

Sweet! If you can't drain the gas, fill it up with some Sunoco Ultra 94 to help bring up the octane rating of the "crap" that's left. Hopefully it's only a half tank or so. Glad you got it running. Have fun! (and don't do anything we haven't already done in that poor car...that poor thing was put through hell in our younger days).

I've had incredible luck with the fuel additive Sea Foam. If you're suspecting stuck thingys in the carb (do carbs have thingys?) then the seafoam may help. Before the 305 in my Trans Am started banging loudly, I ran 2 cans of seafoam through it. When I pulled the intake during the rebuild, the intake ports and backs of the valves looked like new, I was absolutely shocked. This motor had 106,000miles and about 3.5 oil changes in it's life, and the ports looked like new. I really should get pix because I'd never believe it had I not seen it myself.

I bought a can of Seafoam to feed to that infernal Taurus project (that should be leaving soon). It comes highly recommended. However, it's now on the shelf of my garage with about 3 billion other cans of chemicals. Maybe one of these days I'll actually need it for a car.
