$175 a set.

What do you get? 4 delrin offset bushings, steel sleeves, machine screws, instructions, and about .5 more camber than you have right now. And all ESP legal if you happen to care about rules. wink.gif

Not cheap, because they weren't easy to get made and that costs money (especially in limited quantities).

I've got 16 sets total. Some are already sold or "reserved" by customers I know will be buying them. I figure I have 10 sets up for grabs right now, and if there is a need, I'll make more.

merged 3 threads, but all pointing here.
the merge cause 3 entries identical... left the 1st one.
other 2 were cut and pastes.

edit: looks like i was owned by the move + merge = broken links... oh well !

That's a lot more camber gain than you've claimed or admitted in the past wink.gif thumbup.gif

What's involved in the installation - just pressing the old bushings out and drilling a few screw holes?

I would like a set. Are they "orderable" from your website or should I call?

Huh? Oh, nevermind, not worth the discussion.... smile.gif

you have to re-use the old shells, so the rubber has to burned or cut out, and the new ones just press in. That can be done with a vice and not a shop press.

I knew that Sam was at -1.7 camber, that was about .5 more than I could get from my car (and the tolerance lottery) at a similar ride height. It seems to be inline with what I had for expectations. If I didn't already have global west arms, I'd order a set to "have". Just in case.

I think Rob was only able to get about -1.3 at a similair height.

Since I never installed my GW arms, I may order a set of bushings too smile.gif

I could only get -1.3 at the same height. That was my point, he was at -1.7, so it seemed about right to me. beerchug.gif

Jon,

You just confirm you are getting them pretty soon, I'll hold a set for you. I like the fact there are folks I can trust and I'd be happy to do that since we've done similar things before, and the fact you've left a favorable impression on me when we met (and when we've spoken).

Korry,

Yours are scheduled for delivery tomorrow (fedex track is 086562810018328).

Not really, they went together pretty easily. Just drill your set screw holes straighter than I did so nobody will accuse you of being A ) cross-eyed or B ) drunk. rolleyes.gif

Per side it was something like....

15 minutes to get the arm out
What felt like 2 flippin hours to burn out the old bushings and clean up the shells.
10 minutes to press in the bushings
10 minutes to install the set screws (need a 10-32 tap but screws are included)
15 minutes to button everything back up

There are some pretty good directions included if you've never tackled anything like this before.

I installed mine with a loaner ball joint tool from O'Reilly. A bench vise would probably work but I have no bench and no vise. dry.gif

Thanks for the pointers. What kind of torch did you use? I have a basic one. I don't know what kind of gas it uses. Then again, I don't know if that really matters?

Just your basic Home Depot propane plumbers torch.

Use Mapp gas and a screw driver and it won't take but a few minutes to get it clean. wink.gif How much camber did you gain?

Yeah well, cheap and slow can also describe the car so it was the only logical path for me. tongue.gif

Camber... hard to say, I don't have a way to check camber / caster here at home yet. However, the increase is readily apparent to even the untrained eye (read - my wife). I'd have to say it's at least equal to the advertised 0.5°

Posted by: Spooner Aug 2 2006, 01:26 PM

Thanks for the pointers. Just one more question... I'm a little confused on where to drill and tap the hole. The written part of the directions say, to me anyway, to do it through the side of the bushing. But the figure seems to suggest doing it through the face of the bushing as it's flange is facing you...

Posted by: Sam Strano Aug 2 2006, 07:39 PM

The instruction say "drill and tap a 10-32 hole through the outer metal casing into the bushing...". The screw is to keep the bushing from turning relative to the metal sleeve. Not to mention that a screw sticking out of an end wouldn't let you put the a-arm back together. smile.gif

Posted by: Sam Strano Aug 4 2006, 05:38 PM

5 sets left........

Posted by: KeithO Aug 4 2006, 06:14 PM

I was able to beat the old bushings out with a socket and hammer instead of burning it. Then again, they were poly bushings that were installed less than 2 years ago...

Posted by: Sam Strano Aug 21 2006, 02:45 PM

I've got 4 sets left...... Things have slowed down considerably (and I knew they would) being these are first and foremost build to satisfy rules.

However, I know there are a few of you out there yet who could use them (and at least one or two I actually had in mind when I decided to build these) who didn't get any yet. Here's why I metion that. I most likely will *not* do another run of these. The market is pretty small and going to be pretty much saturated. smile.gif

If you want some it's time.

Posted by: Spooner Aug 21 2006, 03:47 PM

Burning the bushing out: Do you want to burn it right down to bare metal? Or can there be a little bit of leftover residue? I suppose the answer is yes, bare metal.

Posted by: pknowles Aug 21 2006, 04:28 PM

You need to get all the rubber out. You can burn all of it out or burn most of it and knock off the last little bit with a wire brush.

I have not installed my UCA bushings yet, but for removing the LCA bushing rubber I found it worked better to heat the outside of the bushing shell until smoke started squirting out at the edge of the rubber (more than just a lazy wisp) and then the rubber would just slide out.

Posted by: Racer X Aug 21 2006, 11:51 PM

I finally got to run my first event since these were installed.

It's amazing what 0.5° of camber can do for a car......

Posted by: Sam Strano Aug 23 2006, 08:05 PM

I'd like to move the remaining sets. They are overhead, and while I know they will sell to someone eventually, I'd really like them to go to the intended folks. smile.gif

Posted by: Sam Strano Oct 2 2006, 04:33 PM

Posted by: firehawkclone Oct 8 2006, 03:02 PM

Just an fyi

With a slotted k-member and these upper bushing, I can get almost 3 on camber and 4.5 on caster! maxed!

Mine is set at 1.8 and 6.2 with a ride height F 6" R 6 3/16"

I'm sure Sam will make another batch if need be smile.gif

Posted by: Sam Strano Oct 9 2006, 08:18 PM

And I'd be happy to have more made for you guys. But wishing upon a star isn't going to cut it. I need confirmed orders this time!

Posted by: Sam Strano Oct 17 2006, 05:29 PM

Bringing this back to the top because I have two confirmed orders for more. I'm not making more until I have 10 solid orders. So we need 8 more to get something rolling on another batch.

Posted by: briandoll Oct 27 2006, 06:56 PM

***SOLD*** , thanks. Disregard below.

I have a brand new set of these for sale. I bought the set from Sam about 2 months ago, but when I took my upper control arms off I discovered that the car already had a set of offset bushings installed, (probably from Global West).

First $175 takes them. No need to wait for the next batch to be made, mine are available now.
Buyer pays UPS ground shipping.

Are you sure the bushings you have are legal? There was some talk about some prior offset bushings having too much metal content vs. OE. I don't know if it's true, but some folks have been caught cheating before. I'd hate to see you get screwed if that was the case. And no, pleading ignorance is not a defense or we might well have had a different winner in STS @ Nationals. There were things on his car he didn't know were wrong, and got tossed for them.

I sold them already, no skin off my nose if you want to sell them. You just might want to hang on to them until you know you have something legal for sure. Just a thought

Hi Sam,

My car is an American Sedan, pertinent rules are in GCR 17.1.7.D.4.d
The global west bushings are legal per this ruleset (the way I interpret them...)
How are the autocross rules worded?

The bushings you make are nice. I just made a mistake and didn't realize the car I bought already had offset bushings installed.

Excerpts from the gcr:

The gcr is at http://www.scca.org/_FileLibrary/File/GCR2006.pdf

17.1.7.D.4.d.2. On other forms of suspension, camber adjustments
may be achieved by the use of shims and/or eccentric
bushings. Rear camber shall be no more than 1/2 degree
negative per side.

17.1.7.D.4.d.5. Bushing material is unrestricted except that control
arm to spindle ball joints must be stock or equivalent
replacement. Original unmodified control arms must be
retained.

In ESP, they can have no more metallic content that the stock bushings they replace, they may be pinned (to prevent rotation of the offset) but the pin may serve no other purpose, and if the stock bushing uses compliance to allow movement (as both of the lower control arm bushings on a 4th gen do, but especially the caster bushing) then the replacement must also (so a spherical delrin caster bushing is illegal, even if it doesn't shatter).

Posted by: Sam Strano Nov 28 2006, 05:51 PM

I've got 7 confirmed orders on these... and some folks need them sooner than later. I need just a few more to make this run happen. It will be a smaller run, no way am I making 20 car set like I did last time considering I'm having trouble getting 10 folks to go now. Normally, I'd just bag it, but those who need them are serious competitors and HAVE to have the bushings, so I'm doing what I can to help them out.

I want to get this ball rolling, so if you have a need for a little more negative camber and either can't run aftermarket a-arms due to rules, *OR* don't want to drag the extra weight of them around, now is the time to act.

Sorry, I kind of had some other stuff come up. We do take Paypal Doug....

And, the bushings came in today. I've got the list and I'll be calling everyone in the next few days to complete the orders. I'm largely by myself @ work right now. You can try and call, but I don't know if I can answer the phone and since I have a list I was just planning on handling things from my end out.

Current folks on the list:
Steve Catlin
Brian Regainne
Jeff McElyea
Greg Olsen
Jeff Spector
Ben Wong
Doug Phillips
Scott Sentirmay
William DeRivera
Jon Wolff
Joe Silva
George Kusevich
and Sean Garnett.

And one set is being held for a project with a magazine. So 14 sets of 15 are spoken for. Again, if your name appears on that list, I'll be calling you. smile.gif

Sweet! Just in time! My gf was still trying to figure out what to get me for Christmas. I'm hard to shop for... lol.

Posted by: Doug Phillips Dec 23 2006, 01:35 AM

Sam,

Best wishes to you and your family. Take some time to slow down over the holidays.

If it helps and you don't mind I am happy to wait until after the holidays to take care of Ben and my bushings. We are in no hurry up here and it might free you up a little. If you prefer to move ahead for cashflow send me a PM or email and I will send payment.

Take care, I hope everything goes well with your mom.

Picture ?? first, I would like to see it. Let me figure out to buy this one... fcad0cab.gif

Sam PM'd me and indicated these are all sold out.

Since I plan to rebuild my front end next month, would anybody be interested in selling me their set? It might take Sam awhile to get a new batch together.

Guess thats what I get for sittin on my butt too long.

They are all spoken for. Half are actually sold--I still have a few folks I need to contact, but haven't really had time to, yet.

There might be a set left in the end, and if there is you have dibs Bock, but I can't guarantee there will be a set left--that depends on what the others do.

Doug,

Thanks for the offer. I have to work, someone has to pay the bills. The only thing is the Paypal stuff goes to Arlyn's computer, and I really have no idea how to access that. In short, I can't really take it right now. Happy to take a check if you want, or a credit card. I can ship them anytime, and sooner is better for me as it gives me a better idea of what I have left.

Posted by: Doug Phillips Dec 27 2006, 09:18 PM

Sam,

I just called your office but could only leave a message. I also sent a PM with shipping details for Ben Wong and myself.

Please let me know what the total of the two of us with shipping will be. I will call you with a VISA number as soon as you reply.

Best wishes to your family again.

Sam, how close are you to having enough orders for another run?

I'm trying to talk John B. out of SM and into ESP for this year. smile.gif

Posted by: Sam Strano Feb 13 2007, 06:42 PM

Not close, don't have anyone even on a waiting list at this time. I'm willing to have more made, but I need enough folks to buy them. What someone needs to do it get with some of these NASA time trial guys that save points with these vs. control arms, and the CMC types that can use them to gain camber. I've tapped out the ESP market I think, and I'm not on any NASA forums...

But if someone were to make it public we make these bushings and how they'd benefit certain classes, you might be able to drum up enough people for another run.

Posted by: Glenn98ZM6 Feb 15 2007, 05:18 PM

i've showed intrest before. i do want a set. cost is a small issue i have w/ them.
put me back on the list i guess.

Sam, was Sean able to get another set, I know he let his backup set go for me, so he might be "on the list" so to speak.

I know they aren't cheap for 4 bushings, sleeves and some machine screws. But they are made in very small runs, and we have to order the materials in small batches and have the CNC machines stopped to download the program (not to mention the setting up of the program in the first place). I also felt it was the correct thing to do to pay Phil Knowles, who designed them a royalty of sorts. He didn't have to give me the design at all, he could have kept the whole thing to himself but didn't. And I feel that deserves something.

Putting in the build order today. Hopefully we'll have them in a few weeks.

On the list I have:

Glenn Landrum
Supermac
John Boiger
Ben Fischer
Greg Wellinghoff
Andrew Meyer
John Riggs
Rick Carlson

While I don't have 10 confirmed, I'm going to risk it because I know a few of these guys need them sooner than later. Please don't hang me out to dry on these. smile.gif

Any chances of an offset lower bushing being made? smile.gif

Posted by: Sam Strano Apr 24 2007, 07:56 PM

No. While we could for the front bushing, we can't for the rear and none of us want to give up the ton of caster you'd lose by pushing the fronts out but not the rears a like amount. Rears can't be done legally under ESP rules.

Posted by: Unbalanced Engineering Apr 24 2007, 08:26 PM

Even the fronts are debateable under the same rule, and I suspect that bushing failure would be a problem.

Posted by: Glenn98ZM6 May 31 2007, 08:35 PM

i havent purchased them yet. my wife left a message, so i assume she spoke clearly.

Posted by: Glenn98ZM6 May 31 2007, 11:20 PM

well lets see here.
on the 24th Sam posts that he's upset w/ me for backing out. w/ in 2 hours i post back that i would follow thru and buy them. i had my wife call 3 times the next day (the 25th) to pay for them and got voice mail. she left a message w/ a contact #. as of today after noon (the 31st - thats 2.5 day waiting for him to return my call), no return call so i had her call back. Sam told her he has another buyer in my place for them. wife calls me and i say call him right back and tell him i want them. he does not answer- voice mail again.

Sam, were ya bitching just to be bitching? your pretty dificult to deal w/ man. it took what, a whole day to sell them?

Posted by: Sam Strano Jun 11 2007, 09:44 PM

Bushings are in and those who wanted them can expect a call in the next day or so to finalize the payment (except Ben Fischer who already paid).

As far as this other nonsence. I was pretty clear when I said I was making another batch and started taking names. I did NOT ask for payment because I thought I could trust the folks here not to say "I'm in", then be out. I only let you off the hook because TurboToddie happened to call and want a set about the same time you bailed because of the cost (a cost you knew about). I thought I was being nice when I let you off the hook for them, but somehow that was the wrong thing to do too.

I got one voice-mail from your wife (and notably not from you). I did not return it because you didn't want them, I had since promised them to someone else, and I don't have time. Since we've spoken and I told her you were off the hook and that's the last I've heard. If you really do need them and this is the fastest way, it's news to me. I haven't gotten so much as an e-mail saying "I goofed up" from you. I got NO voice-mail from *you*, and I'm the only one here to get them. I'm sorry, but they are all presently accounted for. I know many of you think I just sit here and pull a paycheck, but you try running a business with 4 phone lines, e-mail, shipping, recieving, bills, bank transfers, etc. by yourself..... I wasn't about to waste my time when you told me (by way of this forum) you didn't want them you could build them cheaper. So your wallet was more important, then it wasn't because you suddenly didn't have time.

If a set frees up from someone else suddenly changning their minds, I'll let you know.

Posted by: Glenn98ZM6 Jun 11 2007, 11:30 PM

i can still get them made cheaper for my application and that is still moving foreward. i said i was back in only because you were correct in that i said i would take a set. you had issue w/ me backing out so i decided it was the right thing for me to do. your issue of "getting stuck" w/ them seems unfounded.

and for further dealings w/ me, my wife is allowed to speak on my behalf. i have asked her to do so on many occations and will continue to do so for reasons no different than yourself, i too have a job.

as for another set, don't bother. i tried to follow thru w/ my commitment. as far as i'm concerened, i owe you nothing.

Posted by: atakacs Jun 12 2007, 05:37 AM

I prefer this forum w/out flames, please. Flames can be done via PMs smile.gif

Posted by: Sam Strano Jun 13 2007, 12:40 AM

You owe me nothing, which is why I didn't take your money. That didn't stop you from backing out after I explictly told everyone I was building sets I had calls for, and would appreciate not being jerked around. I appreciate the fact you were manning up, I wish you'd have done so without my reminder you that you put yourself on that list.

As far as I'm concerned this is over. You got out of your set and that's that.
